10. A piece of marble (calcium carbonate) was placed in a beaker containing excess dilute hydrochloric acid, standing on a direct reading balance. The mass of the beaker and its contents was recorded after every two minutes as shown in the table below when the reaction was proceeding.

Why was there a loss of mass?
Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction which took place between the piece of marble and dilute hydrochloric acid.
Why did the mass remain constant after the eighth second?
(b) The solution obtained after mixing dilute hydrochloric acid and marble was allowed to evaporate to dryness in the same beaker. After the evaporation process, the beaker, together with its contents was measured and the total weight obtained was 97.3 g. On the next day the mass of the beaker and its contents was found to be 98.63 g.
Why did the mass increase?

What would happen to the rate of the reaction if calcium carbonate powder was used instead of marble? Explain.
